Not everything fits in a perfect shape or the right file format or clients can’t afford better paper. Don’t let it impact how you approach a project. See it from the side of possibilities and when you’re done concepting and having fun, call up your local printer and talk about how to make it come together in real life. Ask for sample pieces to show the client. Get really prepared so when you present you come with a lot of knowledge that will reassure them that what they see in your virtual mockup will actually be possible and look great in real life.

Paper samples: Order some from your printer. They’ll call up the paper company and order a full set of paper samples from your favorite mills. Nennah Paper has a great set. Etc.
Then you’ll have a great reference library when you need to describe a paper to a client. Cut a swatch out and mail it to them to bring the book to the meeting. The feel of paper is a powerful thing.

Make mockups for odd shaped cards and make sure they work in real life situations. Like American wallets. Make sure you get the envelope sizes right too. Get sample from the printer and double check the estimate from the printer and in your own to the client. The last thing you need is to find out you approved the wrong size. Find out what the clients likes to use and recommend some things that will actually fit their work life. Some people don’t like using business cards but love email blasts. Brand for their company and solve their problem.

Atrend press checks. You’ll learn a lot about printing, color and how it reacts on different substrates, you’ll start to learn that you can count on your printer or if you need to find another solution.
Lastly, get a set of at least 10-20 pieces for yourself. Get samples for your portfolio and learn how you solved something or what can be done for another client. Inspiration comes from different places.
