Youngblood Mineral Cosmetics

BRANDING & ADVERTISING

I was Art Director of Youngblood in 2013-2014 and revamped their branding, packaging and display design. For their advertising I created the tagline “THE FOUNDATION OF BEAUTY”.

  • It’s not always within budgets to shoot often enough to keep the brand fresh. They were shooting single set-ups at a time whenever a new product was created. They were also only doing model shoots for the ads every 2 years. I purposed and eventually art directed the photo shoot of every product and shade with Photographer Scott Hirko Photo. I made it possible to re-use product photos in a compositable method so we can digitally create new product set-ups and change color shades for new colors all without having to shoot any more photos until it’s absolutely necessary. This saved a lot of time and money and let us make ads for multiple products at a moments notice. When it comes to the ads I art directed the new model photography with Caesar Lima. With models I wanted a more classy and modern look and Carly Movizio was perfect!

  • Mood board:
Make one for all of your shoots and make them big so everyone can see what the vision is from a distance and quickly get on the same page for the hair, the outfit and makeup. They’re very helpful.

  • Arrive early and go over the shot list with the team. Make sure you have everything and work quickly. Be decisive in what you approve in order to move onto the next look. Especially when you have 1 model and a lot of makeup changes. If your budget can allow for more then plan for overlapping the setups. I recommend shooting from day to night in terms of makeup looks. It’s easier to build up the next look on-top on the previous look instead of tearing it down and starting from scratch.

  • Communicate with the photographer if something isn’t working and quickly decide on what to do about it. Ask the photographer for help, they often have the answer even if you can’t imagine how it can be done. Rely on the talents of the team and appreciate everyone for their contributions. You can’t do it without them.
